Marty retired October 1, 2007 as President-AT&T Tennessee after serving in this position nine years. Marty began his career with AT&T in New York in 1969 prior to joining BellSouth in 1973. He held a number of positions in the company’s comptrollers, public affairs and regulatory departments prior to joining BellSouth International in 1992. As Executive Vice President of
BellSouth International, Marty was a member of the senior team responsible for overseeing the management and growth of BellSouth foreign operations. He also served on the Board of Directors of the BellSouth operations in Brazil, Venezuela, Panama, Nicaragua, Denmark, Belgium, Israel, China, and New Zealand.

Marty currently serves as a founding board member and lead director of Avenue Bank, board member of Genesco, vice chair of the board of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of TN, board member of Lee Company, and chairman of the board of Harpeth Companies, an investment banking, consulting and ventures group.

He served as founding chairman of the Music City Center Coalition in 2003, a community-led effort to build a new convention center, and became chairman of the Convention Center Authority in 2010 with responsibility for financing, constructing and operating the new Music City Center.
Marty is the past Chairman of the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce and of the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Marty is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Belmont University and has served on the board of Vanderbilt’s Blair School of Music. He serves on the executive committee and is immediate past chair of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee. Since moving to Nashville, Marty has served on a number of community boards including past chair of the Boy Scouts of Middle Tennessee, The Nashville Symphony, past chair of the Adventure Science Center, the Arts and Business Council, PENCIL, past chair of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Family & Children’s Service. Marty was a member of the Executive Committee responsible for bringing the Billy Graham Crusade to Nashville in 2000 and a founding board member of Operation Andrew. He is also past chair of the Baptist/ Saint Thomas Hospital Foundation Board.

Marty has been recognized as “Father of the Year” by the Diabetes Association (2006), “Outstanding Nashvillian of the Year” by the Kiwanis Club of Nashville (2006), Business Man of the Year – Joe & Honey Rodgers Leadership Award (OAG 2010), Silver Beaver Award by the Boy Scouts (2004), and as an inductee into St. Thomas Hospital’s Seton Society (2006). In 2012 he was honored by Belmont University with the naming of Dickens Hall. In 2013 he was named Nashvillian of the Year by Easter Seals Tennessee. In 2014 he was named as the recipient of the Order of the Red Triangle, the highest award given by the YMCA for volunteer service.

Marty is a native of North Carolina and holds a bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University and a Masters of Business Administration from Georgia State University.

Marty and his wife, Betty, have two grown sons. John, wife Sherri, and daughter Ally Grace and son Bo live in Atlanta as do Jamey, wife Sara, and son Cashman and daughter Peyton James.
