Spiritual Leadership in Professional Sports | Mike Fisher

Mike Fisher playing Hockey

What We Heard

Growing up in a home with Christian parents, Mike accepted Christ at a young age. He grew up playing hockey, like most young boys in Canada, and early in his career, he found success. But, with success came temptation. After several years of living a life of access and excess, but feeling empty inside, God opened Mike’s eyes to see how He sees and used several key encounters to point him back to Christ. Mike’s turning point came when he was reminded of a verse from Matthew 16 when Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?” Mike rededicated his life to Christ at the age of 23 and now lives his life and uses the influence he has to love God and make Him known. His faith is now impacting every facet of his life, from serving in his new role as Captain of the Predators to being a supportive and loving husband and father. Mike openly admits that the spotlight is not a comfortable place for him, but he acknowledges that God has given him a special skill and a platform to share the Gospel and he is fully committed to honoring that gift on and off the ice.

Quotable: Be present when you are present. Quotable: Christ power changes our marriage and careers. Quotable: Own your past failures, learn from them, accept God’s forgiveness and use them to help others.

What It Means

As men, we can get so distracted from things that really matter. Temptations, careers, hobbies and our ambitions tend to take first place in our lives. The challenge is to lean into things that have eternal value and will have a deep life-changing impact on us as individuals, in our workplaces and our families.

What We Do Next

Take a spiritual inventory. This may sound so simple, but it’s a necessary part of our spiritual growth. Ask the question, “does my faith in Christ impact all areas of my life?” Surround yourself with men of faith. You don’t have to do life alone, in fact, we weren’t designed to. Over the next 6 weeks, commit to MLN. Pray. Make prayer a priority over the next 6 weeks. Let’s be intentional about praying that we will be men of faith, leading our coworkers and families well.
